Cherry Creek Defeats Pine Creek 12-6

By John Cackowski
State Director

GREENWOOD VILLAGE - The Pine Creek Eagles, one of the top 5A teams in the state, traveled up from Colorado Springs to play a non-league game against the Cherry Creek Bruins. It was an opportunity for the Eagles to measure themselves against some of the better 5A teams, and it started out good, but the Bruins would eventually wear the Eagles down to secure a 12-6 victory.

The game matched up junior LHP Quetnin Parr against sophomore RHP Riley Cornelio who is committed to Texas Christian. Pine Creek would have Parr on the ropes early, but eventually the LHP would settle down to pitch 5 solid innings for the Bruins to get the win.

Creek would jump on the Eagles first in the bottom of the 1st with the help of an RBI single from senior catcher Andrew Chavez. The Eagles would respond in the top of the 2nd scoring 3 runs, highlighted by a 2-out RBI single from sophomore 3B Grant Wilkinson. The Eagles would tack on one more run with the help of an error.

In the top of the 3rd sophomore Parker Gregory would get a 2-out RBI single to make the game 4-2, but in the bottom of the inning the Bruins would score three runs highlighted by another hit from junior Tyler Schultz which would drive in two runs giving the Bruins the lead again 5-4.

In the bottom of the 4th, and Cornelio laboring, the Eagles would make a pitching change bringing in senior LHP Toby Scoles with 1 out. The Bruins would double squeeze with Senior OF Jimmy Guckenberger scoring Junior OF Tanner O'Tremba and senior OF Andy Beyene, proving to be a real back-breaker increasing the lead to 8-4.

The Eagles would try to creep back generating a run in the top of the 6th to make the score 9-5, but in the bottom half of the inning the Bruins would get back to back doubles from senior OF Jacob Leaffer and junior 1B Gunnar Garcia increasing the lead to 11-5, eventually winning the game 12-6.

The Bruins improve to 8-3 and 3-0 in the Continental League and next play on Tuesday 4-18-17 at home against Arapahoe. Pine Creek falls to 7-5 and next plays a home game against Liberty.
