Thursday afternoon, Crandall Field hosted a heavyweight early-season matchup, as preseason #1 Puyallup visited #5 Olympia. Featuring some of the top arms in the state, timely hitting, and a multitude of college commits, the matchup did not disappoint, with Puyallup taking the game by a final score of 8-0. Below are notes taken from some of the games standout players.

Puyallup & Olympia (3.21.24)

Puyallup

'25 RHP/INF Mason Pike, Oregon State Commit
Pike was flat out dominant Thursday afternoon, flashing a mature arsenal and elite arm talent. Mostly FB/SL, sitting 90-93 T94 with the heater and 76-81 with the slider. Also mixed in a 2-seamer at 88-91 and an occaisional change at 80-82. Easily delivery from athletic frame with late intent at release. Final line: 6.2 IP, H, 0 R, 4 BB, 12 K. Far and away one of the most impressive performances this season.

'24 C Kai Halstead, Oregon State Commit
The other half of the impressive Puyallup battery, Halstead showcased polish on both sides of the ball Thursday. Strong frame at the dish with wide stance. Line drive approach with gap power. Advanced skillset behind the dish. Minimal wasted movements framing, with low target presented beforehand. Mobile even in 1KD setup, a plus blocker. Imposing presence both at and behind the plate.

'27 2B/3B Max Hemenway, Tennesee Commit
One of the top freshman in the PNW flashed his talent in multiple ways. Mature approach at the dish, consistently finds barrels to the pull side. Stays on balance and through the zone through whole swing with long finish. Cuts bases well. Soft hands and quick transfer in middle infield, talent clearly shown despite few chances in field. Hugely exciting name to follow in years to come.

'25 OF Riley Sanoy, Uncommitted
An intruiging presence at the top of the Puyallup order. Contact-first bat, sits into legs with hands slightly extended away from body through swing. Long strider in CF, glides through field with impressive range. Long frame with room to grow. An uncommitted name to watch.

'25 SS Gage Thompson, Oregon State Commit
Strong all-around game, plays with confidence. Physical player. Slightly upright stance at the plate. Long, whippy barrel path. Finished 2-4 with an RBI. Commands the infield, shows ability to throw on the run. Makes the routine play, feet in right spot through fielding. Clear talent, should be an important piece to Puyallup's state championship aspirations.

'27 3B/SS Brayden Landry, Uncomitted
Another extremely promising freshman for Puyallup, Landry showcased his potential despite a quiet day at the dish. Medium framed with athleticism. Compact stroke at the plate, quick out of the box and cutting the bases. Advanced infielder with smooth movements. Plenty of arm across the diamond. Another key piece for Puyallup for years to come.

Olympia

'25 RHP/SS Trace Pruitt, Washington Commit
Pruitt flashed an exciting arsenal on the mound Thursday. FB sat 85-88 T89 with extension down mound giving added life. Mixed both sweepier SL 75-76 and a loopier CB at 70-71, as well as an occaisional CH at 80-81. Late intent through release with momentum carried slightly toward 1B side. Fiery competitor, kept the Puyallup lineup at bay one time through the order. Impressive athleticism on both sides of the field.

'24 OF Cameron Costello, Central Washington University
The senior continues to have a strong season as he collected the lone hit for the Bears on the day and made some really nice defensive plays in RF throughout the game. L/L profile fits well at a corner spot with an accurate arm that gets carry on the ball. Offensively it's a balanced, left-handed swing that is consistent with each look.

'25 OF/LHP Lincoln Berg, Uncommitted
Medium-framed lefty showcased a polished game Thursday. Leader in CF, athletic mover can track down balls in gaps. Scrappy approach from the leadoff position, showcased ability to adjust approach and work quality at bats. Loose, whippy barrel action. An important piece to the 2023 Olympia squad.

'24 RHP/1B Will Bailey, Central Washington Commit
The senior righty flashed an interesting look on the mound. Long, lean 6'5 frame with loose actions. FB topped 86 with heavy sink, flashed a low 70's breaker as well. An uncomfortable at bat with ball coming in to righties from a lower slot. Exciting upside.
