PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week: MIF Alex Alicea

For as long as we have been familiar with the state’s 2023 class, MIF Alexander Alicea (St. Thomas More, 2023; Louisville commit) has been a name towards the top of our rankings board. Last week, he helped lead his No. 13 St. Thomas More squad to a 3-1 record and he has earned Week 3 ‘Player of the Week’ honors as a result.
While Alicea’s week started relatively slow, with a one hit, one RBI performance in STM’s matchup with Whitnall he got hot in their next game against Racine St. Catherine’s. On Tuesday, the Louisville commit went off for a double and three singles in his five at-bats, and he drove in two runs while scoring three himself from the leadoff spot.
In the day that followed STM took on a very talented Oak Creek team who currently sits at No. 12 in our Power 25 rankings. Despite losing a heartbreaker to a walk-off grand slam, Alicea tallied his second double of the week and drove in two runs. The Cavaliers would then take on Racine St. Catherine’s for the second time in a week and they cruised to a dominant 26-1 win on the back of Alicea’s eye-popping offensive performance. Alicea was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, with one of his hits being a grand slam and he finished the game with a whopping seven RBIs, while also scoring five runs.
To summarize, Alicea finished his stellar week going 9-for-13 at the plate which included a pair of doubles and a grand slam, 12 RBIs, and 10 runs scored. If that wasn’t enough, he also was a menace on the basepath as he swiped a total of nine bags, too. After this week, Alicea’s season statistics are even more impressive as he is batting to a tune of .583, with an OBP of .667 and an OPS of 1.542.
In June of last year, Alicea earned an invite to our PBR Procase - Midwest, which serves as a kickoff to identifying the top prospects in the 2023 draft class. There he caught the attention of our Director of College Scouting, David Seifert and our Senior VP of Baseball Operations, Steve Nielsen, who had this to say about Alicea…
“SS Louisville commit, Alex Alicea (St. Thomas More, WI, 2023) is a handsy and dynamic middle infielder who posted a 6.54 in the 60 yard dash and uses that as a highlight of his game. For what Alicea lacks in power out of his 5-foot-8, 150-pound frame, he makes up for with bat control from both sides of the plate. One of the better bat to ball performances of the day in live at bats, Alicea profiles as a tough strikeout victim at the top of the order.”

For his efforts, Alicea has been named the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week, for the third week of WIAA action, ranging from Monday, April 10th to Sunday, April 16th. We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within Friday's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that by the end of this week.
