OF/RHP Garrett Kay (2023; Illinois-Chicago commit) has been one of the most productive hitters in the state this spring and his latest performance only underscores his status as one of Wisconsin’s top prospects.

Kay was a key factor in Waterford’s three wins last week, getting the job done on both sides of the field at an exceptional rate.

Listed at 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Kay ran a 7.17 in the 60-yard dash and stepped inside the left-handed box for the event’s first round of BP. From there, Kay worked out of a balanced setup with a pre-set barrel wrap. He triggers with aggressive rotation, and his path worked flat through the zone with little head movement. Kay generated 73.3 mph barrel speed with exits up to 92.7 mph to all fields, logging a 70 percent sweet spot rate in the process. Kay also has premium arm strength in the outfield (91 mph), and it plays with carry and accuracy to his target. He’s equally athletic while moving to the baseball, playing with above-average outfield actions. At the beginning of this outstanding week, Kay boosted the Wolverines in an 11-1 win over Delavan-Darien in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, with two triples and a pair of RBIs.

The next day, Waterford faced off against the Comets again, and that’s where the Illinois-Chicago recruit separated himself with one of the best performances of the week. On the mound, Kay was a part of a combined no-hitter, going five innings in his start, in which he punched out five batters. Then, at the plate, Kay was 3-for-4 with a home run and three more RBIs, powering the Wolverines past Delavan-Darien for the second straight day. 

Kay capped off this stellar week of play with his best hitting performance of the last week, going 5-for-5 against Kenosha Indian Trail at American Family Field. He tallied his third and fourth triples of the week, along with another RBI. The left-handed bat was 10-for-12 on the week in total, finishing with an .833 batting average, .846 OBP, and a 2.679 OPS. His lone pitching performance this past week reflects his dominance all season, as he entered the start of this week with a 1.05 ERA on the season, across 20 innings over which he’s tallied 35 strike outs.
