Underclass Invitational: Statistical Analysis

The Underclass Invitational took place on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at the MAX in McCook, IL. Over 110 of the state's top prospects, comprised of members of the Class of 2020 and 2021, participated in a pro-style workout in front of the PBR Illinois Scouting Staff. We continue the event analysis with a breakdown of the statistical leaders.

TOP 60 YARD DASH TIMES
Of the 84 prospects to run the 60 yard dash, 14 of them were able to post times under 7.00 seconds. William Pauling (Homewood-Flossmoor, 2021) led the field with his 6.65 time. Pauling crossed the finish line over 1/10 of a second ahead of Ryan Thiesse (St. Charles North, 2020), who ran a 6.76, good for second.

TOP FASTBALL VELOCITY
The crop of pitchers was undoubtedly the highlight of the event. Two prospects were able to max out at 90 mph or better. Louisville commit Ben Wiegman (Carmel Catholic, 2020) threw every single one of his fastballs at 90 mph, except for one at 91. The other prospect to hit 90 was Illinois-Chicago commit Ben Hernandez (De La Salle, 2020).

TOP EXIT VELOCITY
There was plenty of strength on display offensively. Alejandro Holguin (St. Rita, 2021) and Vytas Valincius (St. Laurence, 2021) showed off advanced strength at the plate, as they recorded exit velocities of 94 mph off a tee.

TOP INFIELD VELOCITY
Infield velocity was a two horse race. Ben Wiegman (Carmel Catholic, 2020) sat 90, topping out at 91 on the mound, so it should come as no surprise that he was able to ramp it up to 90 mph on his throws across the infield. Alec Gonzalez (Mount Carmel, 2020) trailed Wiegamn by two miles per hour with his 88 mph effort. After Wiegman and Gonzalez was a group of five prospects topping out at 83 mph.

TOP OUTFIELD VELOCITY
Not much separates the top of our leaderboard here. Austin Greco (Mundelein, 2020) was the only prospect to break 90 from the outfield. Five other prospects came within one to two miles per hour from 90. Connor Gill (Oswego East, 2020) stands alone in second with his 89 mph toss.

Recent Illinois State commit Trevor Davis (Danville, 2020) posted the event's top pop time at 1.86. Alex Calarco (New Trier, 2021) recorded the most consistent low number pop times, with his times ranging between 1.94 and 2.05.

Four catchers were clocked at 80 mph or better from the crouch. Nicholas Hemken (Edwardsville, 2020) came out firing with an 82 mph throw down to second. Three prospects share the second spot at 80 mph.
