Preseason Power 25: No. 25 Coleman

The Wisconsin high school season kicks off on March 28, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on March 20, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

X-FACTOR

A solid No. 2. That could Austin Marquardt who saw a lot of quality innings last year as a sophomore. This role will be on full display come playoff time when teams will desperately need to rely on a second arm. Coming off a second-team All Conference year Marquardt could be poised to break out both with the bat and on the mound as that vital No. 2 to ace Matt Osterberg.

STAT RAT

11-1, 0.67: That’s the record and ERA for All-State Honorable Mention and First Team All-Conference returner Matt Osterberg. Osterberg was nearly unbeatable in 2016 and is looking to repeat that success in 2017. The St. Cloud State commit is a highly pitchable southpaw that has the stuff to run the table on the 2017 season. The new pitch count rule could hamper some teams with a shallow staff, but Osterberg only surpassed the 100 pitch mark twice last year. His ability to stay consistently in the strike zone should helps ease the effects of the new pitch count rule.

OUTLOOK

The Cougars should challenge for a D3 title again this year, they spent most of 2016 in the Power 25 and lost a tough sectional matchup to eventual state champ, St. Mary Catholic. With most of their offensive lineup returning they’ll need a solid No. 2 behind Osterberg come playoff time and they should be a favorite in D3 this year.
