Preseason Power 25 Countdown: No. 23 Pewaukee

The 2024 Wisconsin high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across the Badger State.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in their respective WIAA Division State Championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams with this initial Preseason Power 25 release which will take us right up to first pitch.

X-FACTOR

+ RHP/INF Greyson Zach (2025; Minnesota commit) is expected to be a huge piece on both sides of the ball for the Pirates this season. This is nothing new for him though, as he has been a contributor on the varsity level since his freshman season, but now as an upperclassmen he will be looked to more than ever before. Zach, a returning First-Team All-Conference selection and a 2023 Prep Baseball Future Gamer, is a strong and athletic 6-foot-3, 203-pound athlete who has run his lively fastball up to 90 mph from an easy delivery. He also features both a 11/5 curveball and a changeup that rounds out his productive three-pitch mix. His talents don’t stop there though, as he will also be a threat in the heart of the Pirates' order this season. Last year, he hit to a tune of .382 and also flashed some big power potential across multiple looks throughout the summer and fall. Yet again, Zach will be leaned on all season long and he will be a key piece in how successful Pewaukee will be.

NEWCOMER TO WATCH

+ A pair of newcomers to this squad are OF Logan Peterson (2027) and INF Drew Van Domelen (2026) as they are both expected to see large workloads during their freshman and sophomore years. While our staff isn’t all that familiar with these two, the Dobberstein duo of coaches seem to be particularly excited for both of them to join the Pirates in 2024.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Pewaukee was young last season, with sophomores as their top two pitchers and sophomores also batting in the heart of their lineup. Despite that youth, they went on to collect 17 wins and a second place finish in the Woodland West. Now with those sophomores now upperclassmen, they have high hopes heading into the spring.

On the mound, First-Team All-Conference selection, RHP/INF Owen Dobberstein (2025) is another arm that will lead the Pirates’ staff. We recently just got a look at Dobberstein at February's West Milwaukee Preseason ID, where the 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander put together a clean ‘pen where he topped out at 85 mph while possessing feel for a pair of breaking balls and a changeup. Last season, himself and the aforementioned Zach combined to start in every single conference game for the Pirates too, so the both head coaches Adam and Marc Dobberstein are certainly glad to have them return as upperclassmen.

Another arm on this team that is expected to be leaned on heavily is RHP Ryan Sopha (2024), who is no stranger to the varsity level. Sopha is another mid-80s arm that the Pirates will roll out there on a consistent basis, as he returns a 2.60 ERA from 2023 and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him finish with an even lower one in 2024. Out of the bullpen, RHP Brooks Bigler (2024) is another experienced arm on this team, as he earned a 2-0 record last season in a relief role and look for his workload to increase this year. Another expected bullpen arm later in the year, if healthy, could be RHP Drew Dobberstein (2025) who is coming off labrum surgery.

Many of the aforementioned names that will see time on the mound will also play big roles offensively as well. Owen Dobberstein brings back a .372 batting average from a year ago while Drew Dobberstein returns a .355 average, too. 3B Karl Eidem and OF Tyler Wallace (Aurora University commit) are a pair of senior leaders for the Pirates offensively; Eidem returns a team-high .450 batting average and Wallace a .304 respectively. Rounding out his productive offense will be the aforementioned Sopha and C Jackson Servais (2025) who earned a Second Team All-Conference selection last year, as he logged a batting average of .288.

BOTTOM LINE

+ Despite their youth last season, Pewaukee narrowly missed out on a Woodland West title. With their youth back who now have more experience under their belts, things seem to be falling into place for the Pirates.
