Q&A with Wisconsin-Milwaukee commit Carson Hansen

Isaiah Glidden
PBR Wisconsin Staff

Another winner of the ‘21 calendar year, OF Carson Hansen (Pewaukee, 2022), seemed to improve every time our staff saw him. Making his biggest jump this past offseason both talently and physically. Standing at a premium six-foot-three and two-hundred-pounds Hansen first showed off his improvements at our Milwaukee Preseason I.D event back in March where he had one of the better rounds of BP. He followed up this performance with a dominant spring which earned him a spot on PBR’s WIAA All-State First Team. To round off a very impressive year, Hansen was invited to our Top Prospect Showcase where he continued to show why he is a top 25 player in the badger states ‘22 class

In August, Hansen committed to the state's only D1 baseball program, Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Recently, we had the chance to talk with him about many baseball-related topics.

Scouting Report

3/21/21

Built at a premium 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Hansen stands out amongst the crowd instantly. His physicality is made even more intriguing by his left/left handedness, and ability to clock a 7.02 time in the 60-yard dash. Offensively he’s got a grown-man look in the box with a quiet confident approach and generates above-average bat and hand speed, making hard line-drive contact on repeat to his pull-side. He averaged an exit speed of 84.5 mph, with a 91.4 high.  Defensively, he was 88 mph on his throws home, too, comfortably moving around the outfield.

OUR Q&A

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Hansen: Yes. There was just something about playing for your home state, and a sense of pride I felt staying home. Also I have a large supportive family that I hope to see at all the games at the Frank.

P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

H: My junior year winter was when things really started to heat up. I would head to STiKS after school and often lift and hit until like 10 or 11 at night. My parents were often frustrated with how late I would be coming home. That spring, Milwaukee came to a few games, and then watched me constantly throughout the summer. And finally pulled the trigger.

P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

H: Walking around campus it just felt like home. Several players on the team reached out saying they want me to come and meet everyone, and I felt the best connection with the staff at Milwaukee. I also knew prior how well their player development was, and it was just a culture I wanted to be a part of.

P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

H: Toledo, Illinois State, Valpo.

P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

H: RHP Mason Buss (Arrowhead, 2022; Kansas State) always gave me the most trouble. He might not throw as hard as other guys, but everything he has moves, and I could never seem to make solid contact off him.

P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

H: I realized I was a college-caliber player this spring when coaches started reaching out and I started putting up big numbers.

P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

H: Put in the work. What you put in, you will get out. I know I put in countless hours, and there is no better feeling in the world than making that commitment.

P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

H: Junior season, I hit two bombs off a tough pitcher in Mason Ruh. Helped us win in extra innings by a run.

P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

H: We might have lost a bunch of seniors but we still have a core in me, Logan Dobberstein, and Gavyn Bowen. Also a bunch of younger guys ready to step up and help us make another state run.
