Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

    TEAM OUTLOOK

Boyd Buchanan comes into the 2024 spring season with lofty goals after returning a good portion of their lineup that finished last season 20-13 with a first round exit in the DII A regional tournament. This team comes in experienced, and one with a high concentration of upperclassmen. Their premium positions at SS and CF will also offer familiar faces that have played a lot of baseball under their belt, while also sporting a good amount of returning pitching. Playing a tough schedule, the Bucs will start out of the gate hot with a home/home series against Power 25 Bradley Central, while hosting Baylor the first week of the season. The club will then host 4A state tournament participant Walker Valley to close out their march. Depending on how well they start in March could be an early indicator of the kind of season they could have. They will then travel to Baylor and 3A state champion Greeneville in April as they get prepared for the back half of the season. Starting in the leadoff spot you have returning junior outfielder Caden Henry, who is a good athlete that presents some speed on the basepaths and ability to get on base. Back in the 2-hole will be Super 60 alum and Vanderbilt signee Brodie Johnston who provides prowess at SS. He will be this year’s leader and x-factor as he looks to go out with a bang for his senior season. In the 3-hole, it looks to be senior first baseman Eli Gardenhire. He will also step into the top-end of the starting rotation from the left-side where he comes in the low 80’s with feel for spinning his CB. Back in the cleanup spot is senior CF and Lincoln Memorial signee Cooper Jones. He will also be the Bucs ace on the mound where he comes in mid 80’s from the left-side. ‘26 catcher Aaron Hise will be back in the 5-hole as he was a major contributor as a freshman a season ago. Junior 3B will be Brodie Lowe, who is a dual-sport athlete that plays football and offers a steady bat in the bottom half of the lineup order. ‘25 Xavier Embry was the primary DH a season ago but looks to take over permanent outfield duties in a corner spot. Rounding out the middle infield tandem will be senior Johnathan Tinker. The Bucs are deep with high-end talent and the early season competition should aid them as they get to postseason play. Pitching depth looks to be their biggest weakness and their region is stacked with powerhouses. However, if the Bucs can get deep outings from their starters, they should be able to outscore their opponents.
